  In the past few years I have been asked this question quite a bit, Larry why do I need a processor/upscaler? My projector or plasma has one in it and a couple of inputs already. The answer is that there is no replacement for a quality processor, a reference processor will provide you with a picture quality, flexibility, features, control and reference processing power to provide you with a picture quality like the photo samples bellow, these sort of perfection can not be achieve without it. Is like adding a $15,000 Reference DAC to a high-end two channel music system, the performance simply just jumps to another world.

A reference processor provides your theater such a profound effect that the picture simply looks dead and washed out without it. Also, the depth of field without a processor practically does not exist, is more two dimensional. In order to flesh out and image you need some serious clean processing power, and the two main ingredients needed to do that is a high quality processing from a reference processor/upscaler and light output.
